2007 National Landscape Design Competition

Our third annual dinner and awards presentation was again a successful and enjoyable evening. I was reminded once again of the wonderful opportunity this presents of meeting members I hadn’t previously had the opportunity to meet: people I’ve talked with over the phone, new members, old members; as well as our industry affiliates.

This year the event was held at the Dragonfly Restaurant at Eden Gardens. This is a good venue with great service, it’s centrally located, easy parking and of course it has the professional connection with AILDM. We’re very keen on visiting again. The evening was enhanced by displays from our sponsors: Alpine, Colourwise and Jambaroo Nurseries and the House of Bamboo. Roger Apte, our beloved sculptor, set up his display but then had to creep off to bed with a severe attack of the lurgy.

Allan Correy, our patron, delivered an inspirational address (to be printed in full on the website and in Landscape Outlook). Other guests included Mitchell Hobbs and Mike Adye who had so generously donated their time and expertise to filming the last global warming seminar, and Alana Adye who produced and managed the PowerPoint presentation of the design competition entries.

As far as the awards go it was an evening of double-headers:
Ted Maguire from Brisbane won Residential Landscape Design under $25,000 and Residential Landscape Design $60,000 – $120,000.

Arthur Lathouris won the Residential Landscape Design $25,000 – $60,000 and Pro Bono Landscape Design.

Chris & Charlotte Webb won the awards for Commercial/Institution/Public Landscape Design and Plantscape Design.

Matthew Cantwell won the Residential Landscape Design over $120,000 and Allan Correy Award for Design Excellence.
Matthew also acknowledged the contributions of his staff in gaining these awards.

Congratulations to all the winners and congratulations to all those who entered- some decisions were very close. Thanks to our judges Michael Cooke and Linda Ross. The winning designs and other entries showcased the substantial skills of our members and you can see photos of these on the website. The presentations will be available for viewing at Landscape Australia Expo.

Finally, I encourage everyone to enter this competition next year- it is a great event and we want to raise the bar as much as possible so that we can all be proud of the standards our members achieve.
