The Australian Institute of Landscape Designers & Managers (AILDM) is an association of qualified landscape design and management professionals who have a sound knowledge of landscape design principles, professional ethics, plants and environmental management. Formed in 1994, AILDM has grown into a strong national organisation, with members in all states and major cities as well as many regional centres.

AILDM designers have design training so they can work with you to make the best use of your land, creating beautiful and practical spaces for all your needs. Communicating these ideas is just as important as the creating, so AILDM members are adept at drawing clear, usable scale landscape plans (including sections and elevations) for you to provide to local government, contractors or for your own future use.

Studies in site surveying, level changes and quality hardscape construction means an AILDM member understands the technicalities necessary for planning stairs, retaining walls and correct falls for draining paved areas. Requirements for landscape plans to accompany building development applications have become very complicated in recent years with new local and state legislation to consider.

A sound knowledge of soil structure, profiles and chemistry means an AILDM landscape designer can give you the right advice about soil preparation and improvement as well as sub-surface drainage. Many new gardens fail because of a poor understanding of the site soil, plant water requirements and site drainage.

One of all AILDM members’ particular strengths is the breadth of their knowledge about plants. With a more sophisticated plant palette, you can take your garden from just the ordinary to something special, with a much more interesting range of plants chosen to thrive in your soils and climate.

Environmental concerns are always an important part of an AILDM designer’s training as poorly designed gardens can have serious adverse effects on local and other environments. A designer with the right skills, through careful planning and management, can create a beautiful garden that enhances rather than damages your local environment.

When you choose an AILDM landscape designer, you know you will have a landscape professional who will take the time and have the skills to make a garden that is uniquely yours and a garden that is specifically tailor-made for your needs, your site and your lifestyle.

When you join AILDM as a landscape professional or student, you know you will have access to great networking, advice and mentoring, business and technical skills development as well as marketing and special membership benefits such as insurance and sample contracts.
