Associate Professor Emma Robertson, the RBG Artist-in-Residence in 2008, will present a special lecture and show her sketchbooks and samples of work in progress, and explain her artistic process behind the scenes at the Gardens before a visit to her exhibition in the Red Box Gallery.

Success with Salvias

Salvias are one of the plant success stories in Sydney’s climate. Salvia enthusiast Deirdre Mowat will give an illustrated talk about the many salvias that can be grown in Sydney gardens and the best plants to accompany them. The Growing Friends will have a range of salvias for sale.

Collectors’ Plant Fair
Saturday 18 April, 9 am to 4 pm and Sunday 19 April, 9 am to 3 pm

This treasured gardening event will again feature an exciting range of hard-to-find plants including those propagated by the Growing Friends from plants in the Sydney, Mount Annan and Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens. There will be 40 specialist nurseries selling distinctive and unusual plants for all conditions and climates. The Speakers’ Program features renowned experts David Glenn of Lambley Nursery in Victoria and Ken Gillanders of Woodbank Gardens, Tasmania.
Weekend entry is $10, Friends’ pre-paid entry $8, speaker sessions $22.

Madagascar Tour Talk

Cabbage Tree Hats

Find out how the cabbage tree hat became the Australian iconic headwear widely worn in the 1900s and early 1900s. Volunteer guide Jenny Pattison will discuss the convict origins of the hat and demonstrate the intricate process of their making

Seedbanking

Seedbanking is playing an increasingly important role in plant conservation. Richard Johnstone, the NSW Seedbank Officer at Mount Annan Botanic Garden, will describe the processes involved in seed collection, storage and testing. Hear about the SeedQuest NSW project and its contribution to the global effort to conserve 10% ofthe world’s flora as seed collections by 2010

Rooftop Gardens

There is much to be gained by including rooftop gardens in city and town planning including a reduction in radiant and reflective heat and stormwater runoff, breakdown of toxic compounds, carbon capture and the sense of well being that a beautiful garden provides.
